Total surface (ha): 7,572.00

Protection Status: pSCI IT9120011, the project area falls entirely within the Regional Natural Park of the River Ofanto established by Apulia Regional Law no. 37 of 14/12/2007. In addition, the area lies within the IBA site "Wetlands of Capitanata" code IT130 (cod.IBA1989: IT95).

The area of the SCI IT9120011 "Ofanto Valley - Lake Capacciotti" is roughly designed for the protection of natural resources and corresponds to the perimeter of the hydrographic system of the Ofanto river.

The area where the  project works will be carried out belongs to the Italian state and to the City of Margherita di Savoia and Barletta and is located near the mouth of the river Ofanto.

The SCI "Ofanto Valley - Lake Capacciotti" includes wetland habitats of high floristic and faunistic interest due to the presence of species and habitats of high naturel value.

The biogeographic region of reference

is the Mediterranean region.

SCI IT9120011 "Ofanto Valley Lake Capacciotti"

The area includes wetlands along the hydrographic axis of the river Ofanto and at the mouth and is part of a system of marshy natural areas. These areas are among the most important across the Mediterranean basin (by comparison with other neighboring Natura 2000 sites) due to the presence of threatened bird species and for the typical botanical species of halophilic habitats, testimony to the larger and more extensive marshes that exceeded 80,000 ha in Capitanata in the early 1900s.

The project area presents plant communities with sintaxa that are very well characterized and homogeneous, and identified as habitats

of Community interest.

The  most common formations are dominated by halophytic species such as Sarcocornetea and Pegano-Salsoletea. When characterized by species of the genus Artrocnemum and Salicornia, they refer to  the salt lagoons near the mouth as well as Mediterranean salt steppes. When  characterized by species of the genus Limonium and Lygeum (Crithmo-Limonietea, Thero-Salicornietea, Spartinetea maritimae) (code NAT2000: 1310 1420 1510 *) they are typical of areas where once there were sand dune cordons and forests of Populus along the hydrographic axis of the river.

Habitat 1150 * "Coastal lagoons" and 1210 "Annual vegetation of drift lines" can also be found near the mouths of streams. In addition, in some stretches of the dune, dune habitats are present.
